When you walk into that garage sale, pawn shop, or guitar show this spring, the first thing you need to figure out is what it is. You’re probably thinking that this is why the Trash or Treasure column exists, but I promise most of you will find that researching guitars (or any musical instruments) can be very interesting – you never know what you may learn! My first installment focuses on determining the make and model of a guitar. It may seem like I have a magic wand that instantly finds the answers to your many questions, but I spend quite a bit of time researching each guitar before I respond. Since I can’t include everybody’s guitar in my column, I’m going to help you properly identify, date, and evaluate guitars. $300 OBO.What kind of guitar is it? How old is it? What’s it worth? What is this stupid thing? I know I hear questions like this several times a day, and I’m sure many of you who are enthusiastic about guitars have found yourself asking these questions as well. I need the money for student loans and fast. This beauty is and excellent addition to any collection. I have made a hobby of collecting guitars and have enjoyed each one. The frets show minimal wear, low action, and most importantly has a great sound that can only be produced by a well aged guitar. It holds a tune very well well and has a rich tone. The neck is of the three piece, three tone design which gives it a rich and well crafted look. NO separation at the neck joint OR warp in the neck and the intonation is still right on. It features a solid spruce top that displays the finishing cracks common to guitars made in Europe at this time due to the resin based finish used then (not to be mistaken for cracks in the body, I have had it examined). It still has the original hardware and feature subtle complexities that prove it to be one of the hire grade guitars of this Hoyer line. The guitar was made in Germany in the late 50's early 60's and is elegantly crafted and is in excellent condition. I have a beautiful Hoyer vintage 12 string Guitar. One of the guitars Elvis was pictured using in several scenes of the 1966 release of MGM's Spinout was a mid '60s Hoyer 12 string Acoustic / Electric folk guitar, quite possibly an instrument from MGM's prop dept.********************************* Deborah Walley and Elvis in a scene from MGM's Spinout - 1966 Photo courtesy Dr. Hoyer Telecaster Dark Green HS EMG Pickups, Germany 1970s.
